EXMOUTH AQUANATAL CLASSES

Why choose aquanatal?

The barriers to exercising during the perinatal period are many and might include low energy, nausea or not feeling comfortable or confident.

The NHS states that ‘the more active and fit you are during pregnancy, the easier it will be for you to adapt to your changing shape and weight gain, it will also help you cope with labour.’

When we exercise our body’s natural feel good hormones, endorphins & oxytocin, are released.
Dopamine, associated with pleasure & reward, which lifts our energy & mood, is also released during light exercise.

Even when you’re feeling tired and stressed, getting into the pool can be so uplifting both physically & mentally. The music, being with other pregnant ladies and gaining a sense of accomplishment after exercising improves your sense of health & well-being which will in turn give you more energy.

Third Trimester Struggles…

By this point in your pregnancy you may be feeling super excited or really nervous/ or maybe somewhere in between.

At this stage the size and position of your baby can make you really uncomfortable which may make sticking to exercise a bit more challenging.

The cardiac system is under more strain, you are heavier, not sleeping well and probably feeling fed up!

At this time your centre of gravity shifts, you could have a lower tolerance for the heat (especially during the summer months) but continuing to exercise still has massive benefits including:

  • Preparation of delivery: Overall flexibility & mobility as well as endurance (physically & mentally)
  • Strengthening the pelvic-floor muscles
  • Enjoying getting the weight of bump when submerged in the water
  • Being with other mums, building your local network
The Golden period

Why should I wait until my second trimester to start aquanatal?

The second trimester can be described as the golden period as it often comes with some relief from the common pregnancy symptoms of fatigue/ mood-swings and nausea as the intense surge of hormones begin to stabilise.

Some ladies will have and feel more energised and emotions settle with perhaps less anxiety for some and a positive outlook after making it through the first trimester.

I’ve experienced the magic of being weightless whilst pregnant in the warm waters of a hydrotherapy pool and I know that you deserve this too.

I’m Rebecca ~ founder of Devon Aquanatal. For a number of reasons I didn’t start any sort of antenatal classes when I was pregnant with my first but when I finally came across aquanatal, I knew that being in the water was totally a bit of me!

Throughout pregnancy, we are transforming literally from the outside in.

Dealing with physical and emotional changes, growth, hormones, identity and uncertainties to list but a few… and having a network of support is vital.

Meeting other local ladies at one of my classes and seeing friendships bloom is such a privilege for me to play a part in and I am honoured that I get to share in the time that you have gifted yourself.

Squats and lunges…

Evidence shows that squats and lunges are particularly effective during pregnancy for several reasons including stronger glutes which are a central part of stabilizing and mobilising the hips and pelvic region.

Therefore, squats can assist with helping to alleviate pain in this area and doing so in water makes this exercise a lot easier to do as the water cushions you. Lunges can also be a great way to strengthen your legs and maintain mobility in your hips.

We know that as your baby continues to grow and develop in utero, it can cause pressure on your pelvic floor and women may notice weakening which can cause incontinence during pregnancy and potentially continue into the post-natal stage.

By being in the pool and enjoying a workout tailored to your pace and ability you will benefit in so many ways.

The weight of your growing bump and body can make it challenging to exercise on dry land, however in the water the ability to move is so much easier due to the water supporting you, making you feel weightless, remain cool throughout and not out of breath.

Another plus is that nobody (apart from me up on the poolside) can see what you’re doing in the water so no need to worry about being out of step.
